This is the first in a series of monthly blogs focussing on the events of my week, what has affected me, impacted me, and key lessons, how they impacted me, how I managed them, and the key lessons I learned along the way.

“What a difference it makes when you know your support network is there for you.”

Four weeks ago, I received the news that my role at Tata Steel was being made redundant due to a major restructuring within the organization. This came completely out of the blue and took me on a rollercoaster of emotions in the following days—shock, anxiety, sadness, and uncertainty.

What very quickly became clear, however, was the incredible support I had from a variety of people—my partner, family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances, and more. Despite the stress and emotional challenges, having this strong support network gave me the confidence and space to openly express my feelings. Their understanding, patience, and encouragement helped me navigate this tough time with a positive mindset and an optimistic view of the future.

Reflecting on a similar situation roughly 10 years ago, I realize how differently I handled it. Back then, I struggled to accept help or believe a support network could make a difference. Feelings of self-pride, stigma, embarrassment, and shame held me back, and I tried to handle everything alone. Unfortunately, this approach led to a downward spiral that negatively impacted my mental health and well-being. The consequences were far-reaching and difficult to recover from.

This experience has shown me the vital role mental health awareness and emotional support play during challenging times. Sharing your struggles isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a step toward healing and growth.

Lessons this week for me:

Trust your support network.

Lean on your support network.

They won’t let you down.

Prioritising mental well-being and being open to support has transformed how I face difficulties. I encourage anyone going through a tough time to reach out, connect with others, and allow yourself to be supported—it can truly make all the difference.
